Interact with this visualization to understand the ratio of the US population per hospital bed across states, HRRs and HSAs.
Begin by selecting the bed type. The choices are All Hospital Beds (including adult ICU) and Adult ICU beds.
Select the desired age groups. Age groups are derived from the US Census data.
Adjust the poverty rate and uninsured rate to the desired levels.
View the map to understand how the people per hospital bed ratio various by state. Click the tabs at the top to view the maps by HRR or HSA.
The visualization on the bottom right is a scatter plot that shows each individual state, HRR or HSA as well as their average poverty rate (y-axis) and uninsured rate (x-axis).
The population, poverty and uninsured data is from the 2018 ACS-5 year Census estimates accessed from data.census.gov.
Total beds were calculated by using data from the 2018 American Hospital Annual Survey and filling in missing data with data from the 2018 Medicare Cost reports. Total adult ICU beds were calculated by summing the med/surg ICU, cardiac ICU and other ICU bed fields from the 2018 AHA Annual Survey. If a hospital did not respond to the various bed questions in the 2018 AHA Annual Survey, we included their totals, where applicable, from either the 2017 or 2016 AHA Annual Survey.
The HRR/HSA shapefile is from https://www.census.gov/geographies/mapping-files/time-series/geo/tiger-line-file.html. We then used the HRR/HSA crosswalk to group and join them.
